A Working Life

Sometimes I wonder about the concept of work-life balance and whether or not it is actually a real thing.

After all, life is everything we do, and that includes work. It's not a scale that needs to be balanced on both sides to be stable. It's more like a mixing bowl: the empty bowl stands for the possibilities we have of filling up our life to create something we love - chocolate cake. Now, if you put only sugar into that bowl and then bake it, you're not going to end up with a delicious cake. But if you only put in chocolate or flour, it's not going to work either.

Our job is to fill up the mixing bowl with a chocolate job, floury sleep, a sugary social life and then the baking powder and the salt and the sprinkles. Also, some times when we bake that cake, we might be running low on flour, or chocolate, or sugar and we'll try to compensate for that by going a bit over with one of the other ingredients. But that's okay, because that's still life.

.In case you haven't noticed, I'm not great with metaphors. I started writing this about a month ago, but I couldn't properly voice it so I didn't publish it. A few weeks ago, someone I talked to got me thinking about this again so I decided to rewrite and publish. I'd love to hear your thoughts.
